Glutton for Punishment...

Happy New Year, my Friends!! Only a couple weeks late, huh? I hope all of you are on a path to make all the changes the New Year seems to make us want to do.

As you probably know, we just made a huge move which involved a LOT of work! So you'd think we'd be happy to just enjoy some time off and our new surroundings, right?? Well, apparently not! Today starts the beginning of a remodeling/redecorating project that may take quite awhile. Yikes!! What were we thinking?

Here's the before pic on the first phase. This area is open to our bedroom and we're going to close it in and change the cabinetry. Should be a HUGE difference! Next is the kitchen, then all new flooring, painting, plumbing and lighting fixtures, etc. I know we'll enjoy it when it's done, but getting there will be a chore.

So not sure when I'll actually get to quilt anything! Although this might be a great time to be hiding out in my room alot.

Just to update you... The trip to Tulsa to close on the house there went smoothly. We had a huge sale and emptied it all out. We could not have asked for things to have gone better. We are now back in St. George and exhausted.

I am wishing you a Merry and Blessed Christmas early and taking the rest of the year off! I hope you have time to slow down and enjoy this wonderful Holiday Season. We'll see you soon!

Sew Much To Be Thankful For!

Happy Thanksgiving, my Friends! This is from last year, but I couldn't pass up another chance to use it. In fact, you might see it every Thanksgiving for a LONG time!!

Much to be thankful for this year. Not only is it Turkey Day today, but it is also Bill's and my 35th Anniversary! And they said it wouldn't last!!

Also, we're back in Tulsa cleaning out the house. We have a contract on it and things are going smoothly so far, so hopefully we'll close on Dec. 7 as scheduled. Keep your fingers crossed!

And please know that I am thankful for YOU!! If you're a blogger, you know how much it means that people care enough to stop by for a visit and leave a note. If you're not a blogger, just know how much you are appreciated!

On our way to the kids today to enjoy a meal and some time with them. I hope each of you are able to be with the ones you love most. God's best blessings to each of you.

I just received it back from American Patchwork and Quilting and it is Miss April in the 2012 APQ Calendar!! I feel so honored to have it included for next year.

Hello Friends! Well, I'm actually done putting things away. Not just in my room, but the whole house. It's very nice to be settled among my own stuff. My room was a challenge, for sure. I knew I'd have to borrow space from other places and couldn't have bought this house unless the storage was there. Here's how my room turned out. Nothing is decorated yet, but you'll get the idea... You can click on the pics if there's anything you want to see better.

We brought an antique piece with us to hold all the vintage tops. It's in the downstairs Office/TV Room.

We also put shelves (what would we do without Ikea??) in the guest bedroom. That space to the right of the shelves is how long you get to stay when you come see me :~D!!

Downstairs next to the Laundry is a big storage room with shelves. It holds all the quilts, tablecloths and chenille spreads.

And finally-- This shelf under the stair houses all my repros.

Can you believe it? Bill had NO faith that it would all fit!! One thing about it, in a small space you HAVE to stay organized. I'll work on that! Speaking of work, I am ready to get to it! How about you? Tell me what you've been up to! I'll finally have some time to catch up.

Oh, my goodness, you all!! How I have missed you this summer! We are finally moved and almost settled. As you know, my quilting room in my old house was, well, insanely full of stuff. Well, guess what? I moved it ALL here!! And my room is MAYBE 1/2 the size??? Well, here's how it looked when the boxes arrived.... Not too bad, huh?

These are the shelves that Bill put in the closet for storage...

The only problem is-- All this in the guest bedroom needs to be put away, too! Yikes!! Do ya think I can do it??

Two Good Works to Share!

Oh My Goodness!! Where has the summer gone?? Oh yeah. It's gone while I've been packing and getting ready to move. Gee, what a fun summer this has been!

Seriously though, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Everything's packed. I don't even have anything to cook with-- Darn!! :~) The house projects are done and looking fine. Down to staging and cleaning now. Wanna come help???

I do have something to pass along...

I got emails from a couple of blog friends regarding charity projects they have going. You may have already read about them, but wanted to share just in case.

The first one came from Victoria at Bumble Beans. She is trying to round up 700 quilts for folks needing them in the South Bronx. You can find out all about it by visiting the Bumble Beans Basics website.

Secondly, Bev Rogan has organized Quilts for Japan and is beginning Phase 2 of providing quilts and more for those affected by the many tragedies that were endured.

Both of these projects seem to be worthwhile and good opportunities for giving back.

Hope everyone is doing well and I'm anxious to get back to visiting with you more often!

Where in the World is Glenna??

Times are a changin' for the Hollyhock Quilts household! We're on the move! Yep, we're leaving Tulsa and moving to the desert SW where the air is dry and the golfing is great for Mr. HHQ!! You may not know that I was born and raised in Northern New Mexico (Santa Fe) and moved to Tulsa in High School with my parents. Bill's job in the Oil & Gas industry dictated that we would remain there for all these years. We always knew that when our parents were gone that we'd leave, too, but it took us awhile to settle on where!

Well, the where is in St. George, UT!! We fell in love with the red rock formations and the climate and it's so good to be back closer to the mountains! For those of you who might not know St. George, it's in the very SW corner of Utah, about 100 miles from Las Vegas and about 40 miles to Zion National Park. So the winters are very mild and the summers are hot. It's not the kind of weather you think of when you think Utah! And I love that we can get all this goodness at about 2500 feet altitude instead of 7000 like Santa Fe!

We bought a house here in May and have been getting a few things done. We'll head back to Tulsa to get our house there on the market soon. I'm sure we'll spend a lot of time in OK since our kids are there, but we'll love the time we have in St. George, too. I may not be blogging much this summer since we have our work cut out for us. But as soon as we're back and settling in, I'll have TONS of new stuff out here for you!

Here are a few reasons why we chose this place. All the pics are taken from our deck at different times of day. I took these to show the mountains, not the homes you see! Hope you're having a fabulous summer and please keep in touch when you can!

Product Review and Giveaway!

I wanted to share something with you that was passed along to me recently. The folks that produce Lapel Stick sent me some of their product to try and report to you on my blog what I thought of it!

So far, I'm impressed! As you know, I fuse most everything so wasn't sure that I would find much of a use for it, but because it's temporary, I found that I'm able to dab a bit on the back and use it for placement without having to worry about it moving on me. Then I ironed it as usual. Since it's water soluble and doesn't gum up your needles, it should be great for stitching, too! They also advertise it as non-toxic, biodegradable, and no fragrance. I like that they donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and support other important causes. Hi Everyone! I am thrilled to be a part of this fun blog hop. Darlene at SewCalGal has done a great job of organizing it and kicking it off. I hope you are having a great time visiting the wonderful blogs that are participating. It looks like there are a LOT of great giveaways! You'll find yet another one at the end of this post!

Many of you know that feedsacks are my thing. For years I have sold feedsacks squares here on my website as well as eBay and Etsy. Well, I am adding something new to my inventory! I am now offering FEEDSACK DIE CUTS! Some of these will be backed and ready to fuse for applique and others will be for piecing. Here are a few of them that you will see available here and in my stores....

Some of you have seen this quilt before. "Four Seasons" is one of my rescue pieces that I refer to as "Tattered Treasures".

I was so excited when I found a HOUSE BLOCK die for my AccuQuilt Studio Cutter! It is so cool that I can just flip the fabric and have houses facing both directions. I have found that it is better to cut your background block and add the sash and border before you iron on the house. That way you don't have to worry about sewing around your placement. Here are four house blocks put together in the same manner as my Four Seasons quilt. I actually like them just as is, but if you wanted to embellish them as I have in my piece above, you could certainly do it!

There is a sleeve for hanging, too. I hope the winner will enjoy it!

Many Trips Around the World Tutorial

I had a great time playing in my room last week! Some of the stuff I did was for upcoming blog events, so I won't show you everything I worked on right now. I dug out a project that I haven't touched in a long time and wanted to show you a technique that I love to use for sewing small squares, or triangle squares, or just about anything else you want to use it for!

Have you ever had a project that had LOTS of pieces and you had to work too hard to keep them in order? This may help. Please note that, of course, I don't have pics from the beginning so I'll do my best to bring you up to date.

This was another of my "Tattered Treasures" adventures! I bought a partly done baby quilt made from precious flannel squares that had no pattern or design at all. As you can see, they were poorly pieced using red and black threads or whatever else was available! Here's what they looked like after I took them all apart.

I guess you noticed that darling little Scottie Dog print, which was probably the reason I bought it in the first place! :~D I recut all the squares to measure 2". At some time I had also accumulated some vintage flannel samples with several childrens designs so I picked the ones I thought would work (see the strips) and cut those into 2" squares as well. I also added some solids.

The first thing you want to do is to lay all the squares out on your design wall or floor. When I started sewing, I chose to work with just 1/2 of the piece so it wouldn't be so large. The squares below have been partially sewn together, so you'll have to imagine raw edges all the way around.

Here's how you sew.... Starting at the top left square, sew it and the one to the right of it together. DO NOT CUT THE THREAD. Then chain piece the 1st and 2nd squares of each vertical row from top to bottom. When the rows are sewn together, cut the thread. Here's how it will look (obviously much longer).

Then, starting with the top square in the 3rd row, sew all the squares in that row to the two squares already sewn. Again, DO NOT cut the thread!

Sew each vertical row to the horizontal rows until you're done. You'll end up with all your rows connected together! So now you don't have to worry about losing your place and end up with the wrong square somewhere.

When all the vertical rows are sewn, you'll match your seams and sew the rows together horizontally. You may want to press the seams of each row in opposite directions beforehand to make it easier to work with. In the picture below, you'll see the completed 1/2 on the left and a partially sewn half on the right. To further help me keep track, I put a safety pin in the upper left corner of each half.

To create the illusion of a border, I used a solid aqua with print triangle square around the Trips design and the finished with more squares.

So that's it! I'll get the rest sewn together and show you the finished product soon, I hope! I also hope it hasn't been too confusing. Please don't hesitate to ask questions in the comments and I'll answer there, too, so everyone with have the benefit of the information.

Happy Spring! I feel like I am finally getting caught up a bit! I think all the books are listed on my Book Destash pages for now unless I find a stray one here or there. Thanks again, so much for helping me clear these out! There are still lots of great books at great prices here and here for you to look at if you're interested.

I finally got some more patterns posted on my Pattern Page, too. There are a couple with a Spring theme and another one that has been really popular for kids. They're available on the right sidebar. This PDF thing for patterns is great! I love that I can just email them. What did we ever do before the internet???

I'm actually going to spend some time in the studio this week. I have so many ideas floating around in my brain that I have to let some out before it explodes!!

I am reviewing the Fancy Flowers quilt designed by Judith Sandstom. Be sure to scroll down to the end of the post to find out about a give-away!

First of all, I LOVE the colors! So Springy!! Secondly, I love quilts that incorporate two different block designs. You get so many interesting things going on. This one uses a Square in a Square alternating with Framed Flowers blocks. I also really like that the pieces are big enough to show off large print fabrics.

This quilt would be a great STASH quilt due to the fact that it uses Fat 1/4s and other larger pieces of fabric. Of course, it would be great for scraps, too!

This 1981 booklet contains the never used iron-on transfers and instructions for the cover quilt. The cover shows some wear and I see residue from the price sticker (no price) on the front. Enjoy!

#75 - Hexagon Magic by Janet Elwin ~ $3

This book from 1986 is chock full of great ideas for using the hexagon block beyond Grandmother's Flower Garden! The 127 include pictures, worksheets, block gallery and much more. It's in good shape, but showing some shelf wear. The $19.95 price is printed on the back. Enjoy!

#74 - Nine Patch Design Adventures by Betty Boyink ~ $3

This 72 page book is filled with ideas and examples for using the simple 9-Patch block. I don't find a date but probably from the early 90s. It's in good shape showing some shelf wear and the $17.95 sticker is on the back. Enjoy!

#73 - One Patch and Beyond by Betty Boyink ~ $3

This 1997 book studies quilts made from one patch blocks such as squares, diamonds, triangles, hexagons, tumblers, apple cores and many more. A nice gallery of photos and lots of inspiration in 72 pages. In great condition showing some shelf wear. A $14.95 sticker is on the back. Enjoy!

#72 - Ocean Waves by McCloskey/Martin ~ $4

Another great book from 1989 by Marsha McCloskey and Nancy Martin takes a look at the Ocean Waves block and all you can do with it. There are lots of pictures of antique and new designs based on this pattern in 72 pages. It's in great shape with a little shelf wear. No pricing info available. Enjoy!

#71 - A Dozen Variables by McCloskey/Martin ~ $4

This 1987 book by Marsha McCloskey and Nancy Martin takes a simple star block (Variable Star) and adds alternate blocks or interesting settings to take it on a completely different pathway. There are 64 pages and this is another one that I liked so much I ended up with 2! One is in great shape and the other is, too, except for some wear on the back cover. There is a $15.95 sticker on that one and a stamp on the first page from the shop where purchased. Enjoy!

#70 - English Botanical Garden by Ruth Srubas ~ $3

This 1991 book has several full size patterns of beautiful flowers to applique. There are 18 pages in great condition. The $13.75 price is written in pencil on the title page and there's a sticker from the shop where purchased on the back. Enjoy!

#69 - Minnesota Memories by Helen Thorn - $3

This cute 2004 book is full of 'lodge' designs to decorate with. Many have a masculine feel, but there are some lighter and sweeter ones as well. There are 64 pages in great condition. No pricing info available. Enjoy!

#68 - Hook, Line and a Hole in One by Four Corners ~ $3

This fun little book from 1994 is full of darling quilt patterns for MEN!! I actually made a golfing one DH to hang in his office. There are 49 pages and it's in great shape showing a little shelf wear. The original price of $13 is written in pencil on the first page and it's one of the few that I've written my name inside the cover page. Enjoy!

#67 - Fast Folded Flowers by Laura Farson ~ $5

This interesting book from 2001 uses a technique similar to Cathedral Window to make fun floral designs in quilts. It has 128 pages and is in excellent condition with the $21.95 price printed on the back. Enjoy!

#66 - Springtime Threads by Need'l Love ~ $4

This adorable book includes both wool and cotton projects in it's 36 pages. I'm not finding a date, but I'm guessing mid 90s. It's in great condition with minor shelf wear. Enjoy!

#65 - Wool on Wool Folk Art Quilts by Janet Brandt ~ $5

This terrific 1995 book has lots of wool projects from applique and penny rug designs to rug hooking items in it's 88 pages. The pattern pull-out in the back is intact. In great condition with very minor shelf wear with no pricing info available. Enjoy!

#44 - Putting It All Together by Cairns/Affleck - $2

This book published in 1987 looks at the contemporary (at that time) side of quiltmaking in it's 72 pages. Remember, this was at the very beginning of the contemporary quilt movement so the emphasis on design and color was new. Simple designs almost similar to the Modern Quilt movement that is so popular today. Excellent condition with no pricing info available. Enjoy!

#45 - Royal Stars of the States edited by Sandra Hatch - $3

This book from 1988 has a star for all 50 states in it's181 pages. If you like the Lone Star design, you will love this book! It looks like most of these finish out at 66" to 75" square. It's in great condition with the $14.95 price sticker on the front. Enjoy!

#46 - 2 Books by Blanche and Helen Young ~ $3

This mother/daughter duo have been staples in the quilting industry for years. The Lone Star Quilts was published in 1979 and the Boston Commons Quilt in 1983. They both have 36 pages. Each book gives great pre-rotary cutting instructions on making these wonderful quilts. There are templates and design worksheets for the quilting included. In great shape, showing minor shelf wear. The $7.95 and $8.95 price tags are intact. Enjoy!

This is a terrific 1999 compilation of quilts from the last 100 years of quiltmaking. You see amazing quilts from the early to mid century years and eye-popping designs from the quilt artists we know today. #48 - Gallery of American Quilts from AQS - $2

For a few years AQS published a Quilts for Sale catalog. This book is a gallery of 500 of the quilts that were offered for sale in 1987-88. There are both new (at that time) and vintage/antique quilts shows here. It's a good resource for ideas. There are 127 pages in good condition showing some shelf wear. #49 - A Patchworthy Apparel Book by Jean Wells ~ $2

Jean is the owner of the famous Stitchin' Post in Sisters, OR which hold that fabulous one day outdoor show every year! She is also a terrific designer. I don't find a publish date on this book, but I think early 80s. It is a fun look back at quilted clothing from that era. Much of it has a 'country' feel. Lots of projects in 48 pages. Good condition with some shelf wear with no pricing info available. Enjoy!

#50 - Jacket Jazz Encore by Judy Murrah ~ $4

This is the follow-up book to Judy's fabulous Jacket Jazz book. It was published in 1994 with 115 pages with great examples of art wearables. There is also a folded pattern for the jacket still intact at the back of the book. In great shape with a little shelf wear. The original price of $22.95 is written in pencil on the title page. #51 - Pieced clothing Variations by Yvonne Porcella - $2

This is a fun look from 1981 at Yvonne's art wearables. Even back then her sense of color and design was amazing. This little book has 40 pages and is in great condition with some shelf wear. The $10.50 price tag is on the back. Enjoy!

#52 - Infinite Stars by Gayle Bong ~ $3

This 71 page book published in 1992 is a lot of fun! Gayle shows you how to take a square block and turn it into a 60 degree diamond to make an infinite number of stars! It's in excellent condition and the price of $12.95 is printed on the back. Enjoy!

#53 - Cut No Diamonds by Betty Gall/Jane Hill ~ $2

Betty Gall owned Quilter's Rule (one of the first companies to market rotary cutting rulers) and this little 28 page book from 1986 was cutting edge with the instructions on how to cut diamonds with only a ruler and rotary cutter! Good instructions for today's quilter, too. Great condition showing minor shelf wear. The $7.95 price is written in pencil on the front. Enjoy!

If you have trouble putting fabric together, you might find these books to be a lot of help! The Color for Quilters by Susan McKelvey was published in 1984 with 48 pages. The other booklet was published in 1996 by Lauri Linch-Zadel in conjunction Quilters Newsletter. The pages are not numbered, but it, too, is filled with valuable information. The 1st book is in great shape showing a little shelf wear. The $9.00 price tag is on the front. The booklet is in excellent condition with no pricing info availablle. Enjoy!

#7 - Great American Quilts 1989 - $3

For several years Oxmoor House published a book that featured quilters across the country. Each quilter also had a project that was patterned for the book. Lots of fun info and quilts to look at! The 1989 hardback book has 144 pages and is in excellent condition. No pricing info is available. Enjoy!

#10 - Sweet and Simple Country Quilts by Jenni Dobson ~ $3

The quilts in this 1996 hardback book are very cute. Most are pictorial and several with children. There are also a few small projects. There are 144 pages and it's in excellent condition except for a 1" tear on the dust cover. The original price was $27.95, but a sale price on the back shows $12.96. Enjoy!

#14 - The Quilt Design Workbook by Beth / Jeffrey Gutcheon ~ $2

This vintage 1976 book was a ground breaking book on quilt design. Beth and Jeffrey Gutcheon were leaders in the contemporary quilt movement. The book contains 176 pages and is in fair condition. I must have picked this up at a garage or estate sale since there are some notes in the book from someone other than me! It looks like the owner wrote herself a note on the front of the book, but it's been erased. This is mostly an informational book with some graphs and a few patterns to help the quilter create. The original price of $6.95 is printed on the back (that lets you know how old it is!). Enjoy!

#15 - 2 Books from Better Homes and Gardens ~ $2
Patchwork and Quilting/Applique

These 2 little books were in a series of craft books from BHG. They were first printed in 1977 and 78, but these are from 1981. Each book has lots of large and smaller projects to make. They are hardback and in great condition with 96 pages each. A fun look back at the 1970s quilt revival! No pricing info available. Enjoy!

#30 - 2 Patchwork Project Books ~ $1

Better Homes and Gardens issued the Patchwork Project 24 page booklet in 1985. It has mostly small projects with the only quilt sized project being the one on the front. There are several seasonal things that would make good gifts. It's in good condition with no pricing info available. Simplicity's Quilts and Patches was published in 1979. It, too, has many small pieces as well as quilts in 96 pages. Also in good condition and the $1.75 price is on the front. Enjoy!

This softback book from 1990 has a terrific selection of patterns from quilts that we have all loved over the years. Many are vintage designs and scrappy. It has 136 pages and is in great condition. The $18.95 price is printed on the back. Enjoy!

This cute little 20 page book from 1993 contains four quilts with a bit of a primitive slant. It's in great shape showing a little shelf wear. The $11 original price is written in pencil on the title page along with a sticker from the shop where purchased. For some reason I have 2 of these books! One has some notes in black pen on several pages, but they don't really detract. The first buyer gets the one without notes! Enjoy!

Need I say more????

Seriously, though.... I was not prepared for the devastation that is still evident from Katrina here. Blocks and blocks of what must have been historical beach cottages and homes are gone. So much for sale. I'm really sorry I didn't see it before. Same in New Orleans. Not much evidence of the storm around the French Quarter, but as we left town you could still see all the abandoned and destroyed buildings and homes. And I can only imagine how much has already been removed! For all of you who were impacted by that awful storm, please know that I am so sorry. The spirit of those we have met is strong and I know these wonderful towns will be back when the economy turns around. Blessings to all~

Added 3/3-- Please know that I don't want to discourage anyone from visiting Biloxi! There is still much worth going for. The casinos have all been rebuilt and are terrific. On the positive side, because the casinos that were on water were lost, they passed laws so that they could rebuild on land. They've done a great job. And the beach is still gorgeous! White sand and beautiful water. Not damaged from the gulf spill as so many people have thought. The saddest part is the loss of historical properties. So don't stay away!

Good Morning! Last weekend a friend of mine showed me a book she had recently received as a gift. She asked me if I knew one of my quilts was in it. Well, no I didn't!! This quilt was published in one of McCall's mags right after my Bees Knees fabric was introduced. I was thrilled to see it included in one of their 'Favorites' books! It even made the back cover (bottom quilt) and the Intro page! Usually a magazine will let you know when one of your quilts is going to be rerun, but this caught me totally by surprise. Very fun!

Hello Friends! Let me first say how much I appreciate your help in my Fabric Destash! You guys are the best! It's so good to know that these terrific items are going to new homes and quilters who will use them well. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Please keep checking as new things will be added. I'll try to give you a heads up in my regular posts when I have more to show. In fact, there's a great buy on a terrific Neutral Green solid yardage right now if you're interested!

I haven't said anything about it before now, but Hollyhock Quilts is taking on a new venture! When I was at Market in the fall, I decided to invest in an AccuQuilt Studio Cutter. Now I know that's not too exciting in itself, but here's a peek at what I'll be offering....

AUTHENTIC FEEDSACKS and MORE in die cuts!! Some (like the house above) will be fusible backed and ready to iron on and others will be for piecing. In any case, these are going to be FUN, FUN, FUN!! It'll be a great way for those of you who love feedsacks to be able to have a feedsack quilt without having to make a huge investment in the sacks themselves. They will be available on my website/blog and in my eBay and Etsy stores. I'll let you know when they're ready.

I hope everyone has dug out of the snow by now. We ended up with another almost 6" this week breaking every stat on record for Tulsa. It should be back up into the 60s, maybe 70s next week. I'm ready!!

Thunder Snow!!

Here's what we woke up to today! I heard thunder with the snow storm. It's still coming down and should end this afternoon. The record snowfall for 1 day in Tulsa is 12.9" and I think we're close to that. A fun day to stay at home!!

Tattered Treasures

Happy Monday to you! Am I weird??? I love Mondays! It just seems like a new start every week. And I seem to need a new start every week!

Things are getting interesting around here. I won't bore you with details, but I think we may be moving before long. We have been thinking about moving from Tulsa to the OKC area to be closer to the kids, particularly Cameron (7 yr. old grandson). We've found a possible house so we'll see how it plays out. The great thing about it is that wherever I go, I can take you with me!!

In previous posts I have mentioned a bit about my love of working with old quilty items. I only have a couple of rules. The item must not be usable in it's present condition and I always try to maintain the integrity of the piece. No bunnies or bears or jackets for me! Usually wallhangings or tablerunners are what I end up with. They are officially referred to as "Tattered Treasures". I've been doing this type of work since the mid 1990's. I sold a lot of pieces over the years, but as I got deeper and deeper into designing fabric and patterns and writing a book, I had no time to attend to that. But it really is my first love so my hope for this year is to get back to that, at least some of the time. In this post, I showed you my Four Seasons quilts made from salvaged house blocks. The quilt below was in shreds almost. Here is an idea of what a salvaged block looked like...

I took four of these blocks, removed the 4-patch in the center and replaced it with a solid white fabric similar to the white in the blocks. I then sewed the four patches together securely and used that piece for my Butterflies. By placing my butterfly template carefully on the 4-patch, I can have 2 colored butterflies in any arrangement that I like! Much more interesting to my eyes than a single fabric butterfly. Then, of course, there are buttons and other items used for embellishment. It's tied with feedsack string. I hadn't looked at this quilt in a long time, and I think I would like to add more fun stuff to it! I then used an old plaid tablecloth for the backing and wrapped it to the front to finish the edges. I generally add some hand quilting around the edges of the appliques to maintain the vintage look.

I really miss doing this type of 'art' quilt! I have so many ideas in my mind, I can hardly stand it. As I said, this is where my heart lies and I hope you don't mind seeing more of these projects from time to time. I would love to hear ideas you might have for using old things if you have a chance!

The TABLE!!

Hi Everybody! The table is officially upstairs and ready to go! I am SO excited!

Here it is in it's down position:

All I have to do to raise it up is press a little button on this doohickey below and up it goes! Bill says the only reason I wanted this table is because of the cupholder. But I'm gonna have to get rid of my big honkin' pink cup (see pictures) to use it!!

Here it is in the up position for cutting. You can tell the difference by looking at the fabric below the table. It'll even save my settings in memory!

So there it is! Now just to find time to sew! See you next time~

I was bound and determined not to post until that mess upstairs was reorganized. It's as good as it's gonna get! Soooooo muuuuuuch stuuuuuufffff!!!

Tons of stuff has gone downstairs to sell on eBay or in a garage sale and the rest I'll either sell or work with. I did find lots of great things that I hadn't seen in YEARS and LOOK at all that floor space!! LOL

The only thing you won't see here is the new table. Men are coming on Monday to carry it upstairs. DH and I are just not up to moving a 250 lb. table by ourselves! So you'll see it next time.

Tin Star Cowboy / Buttons and Bows

This easy 50" x 50" wallhanging is made using alternating squares with Square-in-a-square blocks.! You do not actually make any stars. They appear by "magic" with the proper setting of the blocks! Bees Knees

Time to Reorganize!

Have you ever seen such a MESS???

Honest. My room is crazy, but not usually this bad.

I really do have a purpose here.

OK. So here's the story. When we were in Houston, my DH bought me a wonderful new sewing/cutting table. It's got a machine insert and with the push of a button you can adjust the height to cutting level. So, two tables in one! It's a big 40" x 72" so I should be able to do a lot of quilting. I had to move some things around to accomodate, so decided to reorganize my studio. Why does it have to get so much worse before it gets better??

Even the closet is awful...

OK. I've bared my soul and now I'm accountable. I promise I'll show pics when it's all put back together. Have a great Thanksgiving and think about me.....

Festival Quilts #2

Well, I'm home and trying to get some work done! New feedsacks are listed on eBay. I should tell you that if you need any repro solids at $2.95/yard, they are winding down. On to the fun stuff....

Looking at the 100s of quilts hanging at Quilt Festival each year is absolutely overwhelming. There are so many fabulously talented quilters that you can hardly take it in. I'm just going to show you a few that caught my eye. Sorry, but I don't have the names or other info to give you in most cases, but here we go.

This was one of my favorites. It's from a Japanese quilt maker. They do the most amazing work! I love how the background is open. The detail work is unbelievable. Remember that you can click on the picture to see it larger.

So many of these look like paintings. Just beautiful.

I love that you can see fabulous traditional work as well as super fun contemporary quilts!

Hollis Chatelaine's work never ceases to amaze me! From a distance all you see is the one image of an African child. Up close you see other images quilted in the background.

Cindy Rennels, an antique dealer and collector from Clinton, OK curated a showing of her collection of Antique Patriotic Quilts. Since antique quilts are my first love, that's where I spent a LOT of time! Here are a few...

The one below was made in the 1930s.

Cindy stated that the next one is probably from the late 1800s. Amazing workmanship.

She said the next one was made by a man during WWII in the 40s to show his support. It is just a top. I love them all!

There was a display of Baltimore Album Quilts. They went on as far as the eye could see!

Houston Quilt Festival Pics #1

Good Morning! I'm going to start out by telling you if you didn't already know, that Blogger has made some changes to it's picture settings. If you want to see any of these images larger, click on the pic and then you can also use the magnifying glass to enlarge it further. OK! On to better things--

Well, I saw all the vendors and quilts and walked all my feet off, but it was great! Typical Festival-- Hard to get through the aisles with people crammed in like sardines. But SO much to see! They have preview night on Wednesday from 5 - 7 pm for IQA members so Linda (my PieceOCake friend) and I began our adventure then. We walked in where the quilts were displayed and I, of course, didn't even glance at them since my mind was set on vendors! As we passed by the front row, she said "That looks like one of your quilts!" I turned and, sure enough! There was one of my quilts hanging on the front row at Festival!

Before you get real excited, here's the story.... A few years back I spoke at Festival about feedsacks and when you're on the faculty, they always ask you to donate a small piece for the silent auction. I had this little piece on the shelf so I had it quilted and sent it in. Well, it was purchased by the gal who owns Quilts, Inc. and she had displayed it and some others under a sign saying "We're having fun at International Quilt Festival!" It was still a kick to see it and I'm sure it'll be the only quilt I EVER have displayed at Festival! So, of course, I had to have a pic taken next to it---

You never know who you'll see at Festival. It's a great chance to schmooze with the stars. Here's Linda trying out the APQS George with Pat Sloan. Pat and I got to know each other when we were both designing fabric for P&B. I do NOT know anyone who works harder than she does---

Alex and Ricky were there....

Here's Ami Simms raising more more funds for Alzheimer's research. Do you know that over $400,000 has been raised by her efforts? Amazing!

This is about all you see. People standing in line to pay....

I think if you'll look in the backgrounds of some of these pictures, you'll get an idea of the atmosphere and people. It's an amazing experience! Please consider putting it on your list of things to do. The last picture below is probably the thing I least expected to see here. You just never know!

Quilt Market Pics!

Good Morning! Well, Quilt Market is over and we now have a day to rest (or not) before Festival starts tomorrow. I got sidelined on Sunday with strep throat (I typed strip throat first-- quilting all the way!) so I didn't get to see nearly as much as I had hoped. Just missed the one day, but when all you do is visit with old and new friends, it takes a LOT of time!! So I don't have alot of market pics, but I have lots of friend pics so here you go....

This is Linda Jenkins (1/2 of Piece O Cake) and me visiting in her booth. Linda is from Tulsa and we go WAY back. Long before Piece O Cake. She and Becky met there at guild and that's where they got their start. They have a new fabric collection out with Robert Kaufman. Cute, cute, cute!

Next is Barbara Jones (Quilt Soup) and her husband, Mark, in their booth. We always have so much fun with them and got together for dinner at Pappadeux last night. Talk, talk, talk! Spent 2 1/2 hours over dinner! I'm sure out waiter loved us! I think it's interesting how you gravitate to designers who's style is so similar to your own. And I LOVE her new fabric with Henry Glass!

Darlene Zimmerman and I call ourselves 'soul sisters' since we not only design similarly, but love the same things. We have even used the same feedsack designs in our repro collections without even realizing it! She's a sweetie... We don't get to see each other very often, but we email a LOT to keep in touch.

Elizabeth and Pam were in the Late Bloomer booth. Elizabeth's new collection with P&B is absolutely gorgeous! The colors are wonderful and look so like her. It was fun to visit with them, as usual....

Had a nice visit with Kate Spain while I was in her booth taking a pic of the quilt that Sherri did for her! It's the quilt behind Kate and it is GORGEOUS! Sherri, you're such a talented girl!! And Kate LOVED it, too!

Sherri also did a couple of quilts for Fig Tree. One of them is the basket piece below. She told us about her last minute project on her blog and they gave her credit for 'bailing them out of the fire!". What would these designers do without her?

I also got to see the wonderful things that Nanette did for RJR's booth. These are for the "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" collection. Wonderful!

Did you know Ty Pennington is now into fabric? Here's a pic of his booth. I guess he was there when I wasn't and don't you know he was mobbed by all those fun loving quilters???

I do have some news for you! The quilt I sent APQ has been picked to be in the American Patchwork and Quilting 2012 Calendar! They had it there to promote it along with several others. It's the Tulip one on the left. I was very tickled to see it....

I did get to have a short visit with Jackie and lunch with Karen, but the brain didn't remember to haul out the camera for you. Sorry! That's it for today. I'll be back soon with some pics of Festival. I'm afraid my no money spending days may be behind me.... See you next time!

1st Market Post & Blogger's Quilt Festival

Good Morning! Today is the first official day of Market. Yesterday was Schoolhouse (I didn't go) and Sample Spree (I did!). Schoolhouse is where new products are shown in 15-30 minute increments. You'll see pattern and tool designers, authors and fabric designers showing shop owners how their products can be used and marketed. It's awhirl with people running from one classroom to the other trying to see everything on their list! Sample spree is where vendors set up in a big room and sell products usually at discounted rates so shop owners can get a product in their shop quickly. The fabric companies are swamped! It's great to be able to pick up some fabric and get a model made before the bolts come in. It is CRAZY and people line up for hours to get in! You will be so surprised when I tell you that I bought NOTHING!!

It's really nice not to have a booth and be tied to a time schedule this time. I'll mosey over early afternoon and begin walking the aisles. So today I'm going to take the opportunity to post a blog for...

Amy does such a wonderful job of putting together a wonderful virtual quilt show for those who aren't able to attend in Houston. Thanks so much, Amy!

I had told you earlier that my first love is working with vintage pieces. This is actually how I got started in this business. There is nothing (NOTHING) I enjoy more than to take an old piece that is not usable in it's present state and give it a new life. I have made and sold many of these small pieces over the years, but when I got into designing fabric and patterns, that all took a back seat. Now I'm hoping to find time to do more of my rescue quilts again. This is a pretty early one and one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this was made before I thought to take 'before and after' pictures, so you only have the after. It was a ratty old quilt top that was falling apart, but I found 4 blocks to salvage and turned them into my "Four Seasons Quilt". I hope you like it!

I want to do some more quilting on it, but this gives you an idea of what I love to do most. My friends thought all I did was take things apart! They were almost right!

Fat 1/4 Bundle Winner and More!

Hi Everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. I'm heading to Houston tomorrow for Quilt Market and Festival! I didn't get to go last year due to my Mom's passing, so I am really looking forward to seeing everybody and catching up on what's new. No booth this year since I took my Sabbatical, which leaves me lots of time to play! Will I be seeing any of you there?

For those of you who have never been to Festival, put it on your list of things to do. It's the best quilt fix you'll ever get and worth the cost to go. I'll be taking lots of pictures and will share here on the blog, so stay tuned! Here's just a teaser to show you what it looks like...

Bill and I just don't have time to do shows anymore, but here's what my booth looked like the last time we set up at Festival. I really miss seeing the people, but not the work!!

This is a group of 12 Fat 1/4s in Blue and Red from my very first fabric collection called Fun with Feedsacks!

I know that many of you are new to me so I'll give you a little bit of background (you can also read something about me on my profile if you're so inclined).

I have been quilting for almost 30 years now! Worked and taught in local shops for many of those. I have loved all things vintage for a long time and had amassed a huge collection of vintage feedsacks and fabric, so about 7 years ago I decided to open a retail website to share some of my collection with others who loved them, too! I tried to find patterns suitable and found it difficult so I began designing my own line of patterns which then lead to designing fabric for P&B and then Maywood. A couple of years ago I wrote a book entitled "Sugar Sack Quilts" which featured many designs that were produced in feedsacks and 12 projects. It has done very well for me.

A couple of years ago my Mom became very ill and I took a break to care for her until her death a little over a year ago. I am now back to selling online through my eBay and Etsy stores and Bill and I are traveling ALOT in our motorhome! I'm very lucky that I can take my business with me! You can read more about what I've been up to on my previous blog Glenna's Gabfest.

I won't be designing fabric anymore (too much work!) and I'm trying to return to the thing I love the most, which is working with vintage pieces. I'll tell you more about that at another time. I have some fun stuff coming up like a quilt in American Patchwork and Quilting and a couple of quilts going in "Best Of" books! I'll let you know more when they arrive on the market. Indiana Amish Quilt Murals!

Good Morning! Thanks to all of you who requested the Tablerunner Pattern! When you have one done, send me a picture and we'll have a parade when I get several of them. It will be fun to see what you come up with!

For those of you who are new to me, one of the things that you will see now and then are pictures of our quilt travels. Not long ago, Bill and I visited Indiana Amish country around Shipshewana, IN. During the summer they had a tour of Quilt Gardens and Murals that included several communities in the area. If you've never been there, it is a quilters Mecca! Go if you have a chance. It's just so charming to see the buggies rambling down the street along with the regular traffic.

The Quilt Gardens were kind of shot by the time we got there, but here are a couple of pics to give you an idea....

But what I loved the most were the Quilt Murals! These were mounted on businesses throughout the area. What a treat to see one gorgeous quilt after another.....

One of the best things we did was going to the old Chase Bag Co. factory in Goshen that they have made into shops and restaurants. You know what a feedsack freak I am! Of course they had a Quilt Mural on their building and I kid you not, this word is on that building! It is not a new word, either. They have pics of it being there decades ago. I now know there is a term for being a feedsack freak. I am a BAGOLOGIST!!

Let me assure you that this is the easiest and fastest Tablerunner you will ever make! All you need is a Charm Pack, 1/2 yd for sashing and binding and 3/4 yard of a coordinating novelty fabric. This one was made using my last fabric collection for Maywood called Rise and Shine. Well, OK... I understand that you might not need Roosters on your dining room table, but what about one of these???
